BBC iPhone APP

It's the content stupid

In a parody of that famous Clinton phrase I state my case against the sniping at the BBC and its output. In this latest spat between the Newspaper Publishers Association (NPA) and the BBC. David Newell, a director of the NPA, has stated that the BBC's participation in the iPhone phenomenon will be damaging to the nascent market and would distort what he thinks is a narrow and unique commercial space.

What he really means is that he's shit scared that the BBC will do it better than he or any of his other members can and that they will be left looking stupid and inadequate.

Well he's wrong on all accounts. Firstly it's (that's the market for mobile news and magazine content) not going to be either narrow or unique. Neither are all his members stupid or inadequate and they are perfectly capable of providing iPhone apps equal to anyone else's. The Guardian App is one case in point.

No, the mobile market is going to be all pervading, across all forms of media and demographics and while the quality of the applications is really important the true test of whether a company will survive in this highly competitive space is the quality of the content. Content is king! long live the king.

Now bugger off and write something worthwhile so that punters will actually buy your newspaper and stop whinging.
